GRAND WINNER

International Wedding Photographer of the Year

Fabio Mirulla

Italy

Great couples give me the chance to do one of the things that I love about my work, experimenting, that’s what happened during this shoot thanks also to a great friend of mine.

This photo is part of an amazing wedding that I loved to shoot since the first moment.

About Fabio Mirulla

I love shooting creative photos with everyday life objects, that can turn out to be the best props just looking at them with different eyes, those of a child that can never get enough of dreaming”

I like to think that I put little pieces of myself in each shoot I realize and you can easily find small clues about me and my life in most of my photos: where I live, the things that I love and how I am.

When you love wedding photography as I do, it is impossible not to do that and I like to think that couples choose me also for this authenticity.

I live in a small town in the Tuscan countryside, right at the foot of Chianti hills with my wife Siena and our very fast running toddler, Leonardo. It is such a great place to start a family and have my photography studio thanks to so many beautiful country style wedding locations that surround us.

Shooting a wedding abroad is an amazing experience to mix and switch point of views. I shoot weddings of different traditions, from colourful Indian weddings to small intimate weddings. I’m particularly fond of same-sex weddings, also because Leonardo was born ten minutes after I came back from one of these and they will always be connected.

Since October 2020 I started this new amazing experience that is being a Canon Ambassador, it is an honour to be counted among all those masters of photography.

I love weddings: years and years of moments and emotions condensed in one day, maybe just a few hours, that could fade away if not impressed in photos.

I’m a storyteller of the wedding day, a privileged witness of a couple’s joy.

This one image sums up the relationship they have built on chasing adventure and their love for each other in the mountains”

We pulled up to the trailhead just after midnight and set off with our headlamps guiding the way under a brilliant sky of stars. At over 10,000 ft in elevation, this is the highest peak in this area and would soon be one of the biggest hiking adventures we would embark upon for an elopement. To say we were excited was an understatement. When this adventurous couple reached out to us with their story we couldn’t wait to document this day. They got engaged on this very mountain peak and wanted to revisit this special place on their wedding day one year later to recite their private vows. We had also done this hike before and knew its potential for some pretty incredible views at sunrise. We arrived at the summit as the sun peaked over the horizon and started lighting up the sea of mountains around us. It truly felt like we were on top of the world. As we explored this landscape that was so special to them both we couldn’t help but be amazed at how incredible this morning was. But this one image sums up the relationship they have built on chasing adventure and their love for each other in the mountains.

About Andrew and Bec – Willow & Wolf

Hey! We’re Andrew and Bec, we are elopement photographers from Canmore, Alberta, in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Our favourite memories together are wild adventures in the outdoors, sunrise-seeking, stargazing and simply enjoying each others company. We started shooting weddings together while living out of an old ambulance camper van in Australia and fell in love with telling stories about connection and travelling to beautiful places around the world. Wanting to combine our love for adventure with our passion for photography, we naturally fell into the world of elopements. Our personal camping and hiking trips turned into shared experiences with couples wanting to celebrate their wedding day in a unique and meaningful way. Hiking with wedding dresses hooked on backpacks, vows on summits and coffee in camp mugs. It’s through these adventures that we aim to create unforgettable memories alongside images that capture the essence of the incredible landscapes that surround us.

WINNER – Mic Panic

It was a rainy autumn day and I saw how the bride was not quite happy about it. I went in search of a nice spot in the location and saw this great corner. I asked the couple to trust and walk with me to this spot for 5 mins despite the rain and mud. When I looked at my display covered with raindrops after triggering twice I saw this picture. I saw it right away that it was something special.”

My name is Mic and I am an intimate wedding and adventurous elopement photographer from Black Forest, Germany. After years as a creative graphic designer, I decided to try something new. 2014 I shoot my first wedding and from this point, my world changed. People started calling me immediately and before I checked what is happening I was traveling to capture stories for all kinds of people. I want to create art while capturing the connection between humans. I want to show people how they felt and how I see the world: unique, convincing, and authentic. My goal each time is to bring them back to the exact moment they were taken. With my pictures. Every time. Love storytelling is truly my purpose because I still get goosebumps when I hear couples read their secret vows. As a wedding photographer, I know that no one is closer to the couple than we are, seeing the love and respect that people have for each other. And I want to capture that in intimate and pure photos.

After taking a few random photos of the tent with sunset, I sighted the shadow of the poles projected by my freestanding speed-lights. I then ran back to the dance floor to ask my second photographer to keep only one of the speed-lights on. I ran outside of the tent and I was barely able to capture this moment before the couple walked away from the dance floor.”

Below is a portion of the letter from a family member who couldn’t come to my client’s wedding, however was able to experience their wedding by looking at the photos I documented. I was highly humbled and embraced when I read her letter, and I really think it genuinely speaks for my photography. “What your photos depicted weren’t portraits of people, they were so much more…you were able to encapsulate moments between best friends and lovers and old married couples as well. You caught not only the expected emotions like joy and hope and pride, but even the more subtle emotions of anxiety and nervousness that accompany all of life’s big changes. I looked into those faces and I felt all their emotions right along with them. It was like magic. Well, let’s face it, it IS magic – it is your gift…Sincerely, Michele C”. Based in the Washington, D.C metro area and often travel for work and inspiration with huge support coming from my family.

The client requested a specific type of tree which we simply couldn’t find anywhere. We travelled to the coast for sunset portraits on the beach. As we drove through the Outeniqua mountains we were met with clouds and mist and knew that there was very little chance of golden hour on the beach. We changed course and stopped between the mist in the mountain pass and as luck would have it, we found a tree! The client bravely climbed the first branch of the tree and we were able to create magic.”

I am a South African wedding photographer based in the Garden Route and I get to experience and see some incredible moments in this beautiful country. It is amazing to have clients trust you with these important events in their lives and then share these experiences with them. I’m married to a talented creative genius, dad to a little rock-star, and most days you’ll find me and our Scotty either in the office finalising projects or in the garden chasing anything that moves.

WINNER – Harsha Maduranga Jayasekara

On this day, I had just finished taking photos at the groom’s house and was getting ready to leave for the wedding function. As soon as I saw the groom’s vehicle parked on the road at that point, I decided that it was more suitable for a photo. I think this photo was made more attractive because of the flock of pigeons that flew at a moment no one expected. I like to break the rules from time to time and adapt to them and take photos.”

He has participated in workshops in many foreign countries to increase his knowledge of photography and gain international experience.

Usually I don’t take group photos, but if my couples ask me to do it anyway, I love to do so, absolutely! In this case, after getting ready shooting in the morning, we stepped out of the building and my groom asked me to do a group shot for them in front of a restaurant nearby, which has been the home to some great memories for them in the past. After I finished the work that they wanted , I asked them if I could do something I would love to try. They were happy to say yes , and we spent 2 minutes taking this interesting group shot. They even love it more than I do.”

A wedding photographer who shoots weddings real to life, in terms of my own point of view – Cafa Style – A mixture of Art and Documentary. Photography is much more than a job for me. The camera helps me meet amazing couples around the world.

WINNER – Darren Wigley

Sean and Matt’s surprise wedding! They invited their guests under the guise of Sean’s 50th birthday but mid-way through the night, surprised everyone by telling them they were getting married! The couple first met on the dance floor 19 years ago so the theme of the party was literally perfect for them. They rounded off the night with drag and dance performances, DJs and a surprise lip-sync performance by one of the grooms.”

On a wedding day (or really any day) we are always watching for how light falls. This image of Jessa was captured during the limo ride on route to the venue. When she had rolled down the window for a moment of fresh air I immediately noticed how the light not only perfectly hit her but also created a reflection on the other window. A glance in the direction of the light + a push of the shutter became a favourite image from their day.”

We’re a couple of prairie kids transplanted to the west coast, living in Vancouver Canada with our daughter August Grey. Getting to call Vancouver home for the past 12 years has truly inspired us and has influenced the work that we create today. We play with light + dark and curate artful expressions of love. We live for depth in connection + joy-filled moments of levity. Married since 2005, we’re still in love with love stories. And we bring that love of love to every wedding we shoot together.
