We are very excited to be joined by Wedding Photographer and creator of  This is Reportage (TIR) Alan Law as one of our expert judges this year. Based in Cornwall UK, Alan specialise in the documentary/reportage aspect of weddings because that’s what he loves to capture: The real, unscripted moments. His passion for this led him to create ‘This is Reportage‘ – a world-wide community of photographers celebrating the art and skill of documentary wedding photography. Wedding are all about moments; and capturing these moments is what drives him.

What will make an entry stand out to you this year?

Something that grabs me, for whatever reason that may be. An incredibly emotional moment; gorgeous light; an amazing composition. All those things are important, but moment is the most important for me. But also seeing something captured that we all see at every wedding, but captured in a totally unique and different way.

What do you love most about judging the IWPOTY Awards?
I always love looking at brilliant wedding photography, so I’m super excited to see all the entries from all over the world for IWPOTY.
How many years you been a wedding photographer and approximately how many weddings do you photograph each year. How many frames would you shoot during a session and how many do you deliver?
13 years shooting, now about 20 per year. I shoot about 9,000 frames and deliver about 800.
What’s one myth about wedding photography you’d love to bust?
It doesn’t bother me personally, but I know a lot of photographers dislike the notion that wedding photography is at the bottom of the skill ladder. I don’t care what other people think, but we all know how incredibly difficult our job is – how skilled we need to be in all manners of photography, people-skills and business – and so it’d be nice if that ‘bottom rung’ myth was truly kicked into the dust.
How do you stay creatively inspired year after year?
With running This is Reportage I get to see tens of thousands of images from photographers all over the world every year – I get a lot of inspiration from seeing the wealth of talent that’s out there. It can also be a bit of a rollercoaster at times, making me doubt my own personal skills, but it’s also super inspiring.
We can’t wait to work with Alan and drawing on his expertise and if you’ve not already come across his photography community / award program be sure to check out This is Reportage
